Regulation on Quality Assurance Agencies

According to the Quality Assurance in Universities Act, the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy has to promulgate the quality assurance agencies qualified to perform audits at public universities and universities of applied sciences in Austria.

1) Agencies qualified to perform audits in Austria (§ 19 Quality Assurance in Universities Act)

Audits in the fields specified in § 22 of the Quality Assurance in Universities Act can be performed by the Austrian Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation, by quality assurance agencies registered in the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) or by other internationally recognised and independent quality assurance agencies. In the latter cases, the result of the audit is deemed to have the same effect as that of an audit performed by the Austrian Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation.

The Federal Minister has to promulgate the quality assurance agencies by way of a regulation.

2) Procedure for quality assurance agencies to be listed in the regulation

Quality assurance agencies wishing to perform audits at public universities or universities of applied sciences and meeting the requirements of § 19 of the Quality Assurance in Universities Act, have to apply to the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy. Inclusion in the regulation requires an expression of interest by the quality assurance agency concerned and verification of compliance with the criteria by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy.
