The European Union supports the activities of its Member States in the field of research and development primarily through its so-called framework programmes. These have proved to be a great success and have evolved continuously since the launch of the first programme in 1984.
The seventh Framework Programme was the first one to cover a period of seven instead of four years and had a total budget of over EUR 54 million. The current Framework Programme Horizon 2020 (2014 – 2020) has a budget of around EUR 80 million and is the world’s largest transnational research programme. It is the most important tool to implement the European Research Area.
