Foundation for Austrian Studies; Central and East European Studies Centre

Established in 1988, the Foundation for Austrian Studies (‘Stichting Oostenrijkse Studiën’) promotes knowledge about Austria and Central Europe in the Netherlands and stimulates academic exchange. In close cooperation with Leiden University the Foundation established a special Chair for Central European and Austrian Studies. A visiting professorship, has been in place for more than twenty-five years. Our visitors come from several disciplines (history, arthistory, literature and languages, musicology, political sciences) and from many universities. In 2016, the Leiden Foundation and the History Institute cofounded the Central and East European Studies Centre (CEES), a joint initiative with the Leiden Institute of Political Sciences and the Institute for Public Administration. An international speakers‘ series forms part of our activities. In 2017 we welcome a new professor on the special chair, who will work together with the current team to promote new scholarship about Austria and Central Europe in the Dutch context.
